Your Journey
Your journey: HOME AIRPORT – BANGKOK – TRAT – MINI-VAN/TAXI TO KOH CHANG PIER – BOAT TO KOH CHANG – MINI-VAN/TAXI TO THE SPA.
If you wish to fly directly to Bangkok, Thailand you can do so from London. Thai Airways fly direct and you can book directly through their website or a third party, flight scanner site. There is also a no-frills, budget flight, called Scoot flying directly to Thailand from Gatwick. If you’re lucky you can find a competitive price!
Flying from Birmingham or Manchester airport you will travel either via the Middle East (such as Quatar or Dubai) or a European airport (such as Frankfurt or Paris).
Upon arriving in Bangkok you could spend a few days visiting the city before taking a short flight to Trat which is the closest airport to the retreat, or transfer directly, depending on your wish. If you wish for recommended places to visit in Bangkok and places to stay, please join the Thailand WhatsApp group (see details below).
When you arrive in Trat it is a 17km drive to the Koh Chang Pier. Here you will take a delightful, short boat crossing to Koh Chang, the tropical island where your retreat will take place.
The transfer to The Spa from Trat airport can be booked when you arrive at Trat airport or pre-booked with the Spa directly for 600 Thai Bhat (£15).
When the boat arrives in Koh Chang your transfer will take you to the retreat which is situated on the very quiet east coast of the island.
Here you can settle into your room, relax, and get ready for your six days of Meditation retreat.
The journey to the retreat, everyone you meet, and everything you learn upon the way, makes the experience even more powerful.
Bangkok Tips
If you’re visiting BKK for the first time i recommend staying in or around the Chinatown (Yarowat Rd) area.
It’s still quite historical, comes alive at night and is quite walkable, there’s a lot of delicious street food to try and it’s not too far from other locations to visit such as:
The main tourist sites in and around the river. Wat Arun, Wat Pho (home of the reclining Buddha), The Grand Palace, Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
Also there are some impressive shopping centres around the river there is Asiatique and the super modern ICONSIAM
It’s close to Metro/MRT/BTS links which can take you across the city.
It’s by Hua Lamphong station where you can take a train to Ayuthaya (historical Buddhist site) for the day (or even stay the night there and come back the following day.
BKK has some amazing markets and night markets which are well visiting such as Chatuchak.
There is a very good transportation system and the BTS (Skytrain) is well worth riding on to see the city from above.
I would recommend downloading the GRAB Taxi app on your phone. GRAB bought out UBER in Thailand and it functions in the same way. It’s safe and reliable and tells you the cost of the trip before you enter the taxi.
This app will also allow you to order most street and restaurant food to your hotel if you don’t fancy going out!
The one thing that I would advise against on your first trip is not to go in or on a TukTuk tour with a driver that you don’t know or haven’t been recommended or who just stops by you offering travel/tourist advice when you are looking a little lost. This is where the Grab app can come in handy!
