The breath is an effective method to concentrate the mind. Mindful breathing is introduced in the third chapter of Guide to the Mindful Way of Life.

We can enhance our meditations by uniting them with the breath.

For example, when we train in gratitude to help focus and stabilise the mind, we can say to ourself.

Breathing in, I allow gratitude to arise in my mind.
Breathing out, I remember the kindness of others.

With familiarity, we can simplify this.

Breathing in, gratitude.
Breathing out, kindness.

This training can be enjoyed during the quiet of meditation or we can engage with this breathing method when we pause for a few moments.

The breath is our anchor to the present moment, and we can flavour it with whatever theme we wish to gain a deeper experience of.
