Inner Revolution

” ‘Inner Revolution’ is a very stimulating read- lots of food for thought- nice photographs too!”

Inner Revolution is now available.

There is a link on the second page to Oxfam.   Donations can be made to the people of Haiti.  We have a high (11.2MB) and low resolution (1.3MB) version depending upon your internet connection.

To access Inner Revolution please send an email to Mind Space with the subject ‘Inner Revolution’ and you will receive your copy directly.

Please let us know in the subject – ‘high’ or ‘low’, depending on which size you would like.  You can forward it to others and make it available on your blog.

Here is the introduction to the publication

“The spirit of revolution is strong – why not turn the revolution inwards towards the negativity within our minds. The negativity that lurks within us is what is responsible for all the issues we experience.
All the problems that we see in the world can be traced back to anger, desire and confusion.
Arising out of these emotions we see war, environmental issues, poverty and so forth.

It is oh so easy to spend energy in pointing ones finger to the world outside and proclaiming this must change or this person should alter their behavior – although the blaming process is easy the results from this approach are limited. It is far more constructive to look within ones own mind and to create change.

Some meditators each year celebrate a “change your mind day.” Why not have this everyday?!
To revolt against the negativity within, that disturbs our mind. The practice of Meditation helps us to discover in a constructive manner what is taking place in our mind – what is at the root of our problems and to gently and peacefully take this out. The articles shared in this e-book illuminate how it is possible to take a meditative perspective…it always is. The more we do the more peaceful and happy we will be. We can then share this experience with all those around us.”

The new Meditation E-book ‘Inner Revolution’ by Adam Lobon is now available!

Meditation “to go”

The “to go” market is huge in our busy world -

It is very common now for people to say with respect to meditation – ‘I don’t have the time”.

We appreciate this at Mind Space and we are fully aware of the business of peoples lives.

This is why we have launched a facility to be able to download meditations onto your iPod or similar device and listen to them on the go.

Tune into peace as you take your bus/train/tram/tube journey to work.

The meditations are 15 minutes long each – the length of time it would take you to travel from Birmingham to Coventry on the train by the time you have settled. Or travel through the Tube in the City putting your stress on hold and creating mind space.

Simply turn on your device and de-stress for 15 minutes.

Arrive at work- refreshed, focused and ready for action!

Twenty points to help you prepare for meditation

  1. We can either start our meditation on a chair with a cushion supporting our back if necessary or on the floor in the traditional cross legged position.
  2. Whichever way we choose to start, the most important aspect is to keep a straight back not rigidly straight just so we stay attentive and alert.
  3. We tilt our head slightly down, rest our hands in our lap and gently close our eyes – if we feel tired or sleepy then we can open our eyes a little to let some light in.
  4. If we are on a chair then its good to keep both feet on the floor, not crossed.
  5. If we are sitting on the floor then to begin with we can sit on a cushion and make sure that our hips are higher than our knees!
  6. Our knees if possible should touch the floor – if we find this uncomfortable then you can prop up one of your knees with a cushion.
  7. Most importantly however, is that we feel comfortable, alert and relaxed.
  8. It’s good to try and first still our self physically before we meditate but not to the point of experiencing great discomfort – if you have a lot of pain in your body and need to move then move, it doesn’t help to endure discomfort to the point of distraction!
  9. When we have settled into a comfortable posture then we can start to try and disengage our mind from distractions and thoughts from the day.
  10. We can do this by mentally gathering our attention into the centre of our body – try to reel in all thoughts that take you to the external world and instead gather your thoughts within, as you do this allow the world outside of you to gradually melt away and dissolve into empty space.

Depression, Prozac Nation, George Orwell and Becoming Your Own Therapist….

taken from the blog

“Never again will you be capable of ordinary human feeling. Everything will be dead inside you. Never again will you be capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or integrity. You will be hollow. We shall squeeze you empty and then we shall fill you with ourselves.”
Above is a quote from George Orwells book 1984. The state that he is describing is one similar to deep depression.

The “we” that he is talking about in the context of this article is our own attitude not the states!  When depression strikes it can feel ultimate.  As though never again will we recover.  It feels as though a light has been turned off inside for good.  Recovery seems impossible unless a miracle occurs like Elizabeth Wurtzel describes in her book written in 1997 – Prozac Nation:

“If only my life could be more like the movies. I want an angel to sweep down to me like he does to Jimmy Stewart in “That’s a Wonderful Life” and talk me out of suicide. I’ve always waited for that moment of truth to set me free and change my life forever. But he won’t come. It doesn’t happen that way.”

Alas this doesn’t happen – the solution seems to be outside of us is some form or another.

Over 31 million people in the UK take anti-depressants. That’s is a lot of medication swilling around in the waters.  Recently experts (?) are finally discovering that perhaps this medication isn’t that effective.

The experts are starting to see that softer therapies maybe the option. Well just having someone listen to you for a start is a help! GP’s don’t have the time anymore, there is someone else behind you. One dear friend of mine upon loosing her father went to the doctor out of desperation.  One of the first things that he said to her was “do you want some tablets.”

In times of trouble many people turn to a faith for support.  They go along to a meeting or group and find comfort – if they agree with the majority. You can trade in your ability to think rationally so that you will receive acknowledgment and support.

Those with money may pay a therapist to get them back on track – its a big business.

What you find if you practice meditation is that you find strength within – you can become your own therapist – your medication is meditation.  There is no charge, no side affects and only positive results. With skillful training you can diagnose and empower yourself to change by changing your mind and attitude.  The results may not come as immediate as taking a pill. They will however come if you believe in change.

The words ‘never again’ that are quoted from Orwells’ 1984 dissolve away.

The Middle Way View…

In the last post I introduced the debate that I took part in yesterday on the Sikh Channel TV.

IMG_1171

As mentioned my conclusion from the show was that we need to follow the middle way – the path between the two extremes.  Not too tight and not too loose.  Like the musician tuning their instrument – if the strings are too tight then the string snaps if they are too loose then there is no sound.

The debate and show was around alternative health and the objective was to introduce the idea of alternative health into peoples lives.

Someone close to me is currently deciding which treatment to take for prostrate cancer. The conventional or the alternative.  The doctors in the NHS hospital only see one option.  Those in the alternative clinics strongly advise to avoid any invasive treatment.

It is therefore refreshing to meet a practitioner who is open to both paths and is not so strongly attached to their view that they can’t see outside it.  I have met such a Doctor in a hospital in the West Midlands.  I will be visiting that hospital to deliver meditation classes for his patients.

I believe you can combine the two treatments.  What is most important is the mental perspective.

For example the NHS have recently cut a huge amount of funding for Homeopathic treatment – they have found no hard evidence that it works!  However people are cured through visiting Homeopathic doctors. Largely (and the Homeopaths will agree) through the placebo effect.  Mind over matter.

The placebo effect is very powerful. Why?  Our mind is very powerful and can empower us to heal if we believe in the treatment that we are taking.  If there is no belief that it works, what’s the point in taking it?

One of the benefits of meditation practice is that it gives us great confidence in the power of the mind to heal the body – not necessary to the extreme so we neglect any type of medication. But in conjunction with taking medication.

A student who attending my meditation class from Switzerland for around a year was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  She decided strongly that she was not going to have it.  She didn’t buy into the cancer drama – she maintained a huge positive outlook – the cancer disappeared.  No medication – just simply through the power of her mind.

The most hardened skeptic upon hearing the story directly from her…would be convinced.

I don’t conclude however from this story that this is the only way. It is one approach and it worked for Anna at that time in her life. The recovery process depends upon many factors – meditation practice placed gently at the heart of it, however can only help.

At my Great Grandfather funeral around 15 years ago I remember talking to the vicar who I was sitting next to in the wake.

I told him: “the problem I have with Christianity is that I am irritated by Christians who tell me that it is the only way”. I then asked him: “is it the only way?”
He responded: “no I believe in Christ – but I don’t believe it is the only way, it works for me.”

He gave a warm, happy smile and carried on eating.  It was like a breath of fresh air.

This approach needs to be taken in the Health Service, including the alternative to give patients the space and opportunity to heal.  Rather than being preached at and having treatment enforced the patient is given options and most important the belief, vision and encouragement they can recover.

They are not just a service user – they are a human being with great potential.
